Israeli Forces Withdraw from Khiam, Marjayoun Under Ceasefire Agreement
Dec 12, 2024, 12:28 PM
Israeli forces have initiated their first withdrawal from southern Lebanon as part of a ceasefire agreement with Hezbollah, which took effect on November 27, 2024. The withdrawal began in the towns of Khiam and Marjayoun, where Israeli troops were replaced by the Lebanese Armed Forces and UN peacekeepers (UNIFIL). This marks a significant step toward implementing the terms of the truce, which requires Israel to fully exit southern Lebanon within 60 days and for Hezbollah to relocate north of the Litani River. The United States Central Command (CENTCOM) confirmed the withdrawal, with General Erik Kurilla overseeing the process. Lebanese Prime Minister Najib Mikati praised the deployment of Lebanese forces, calling it a key step toward stability in the region. However, hours after the withdrawal, an Israeli drone strike in Khiam injured civilians, raising concerns about ceasefire violations. The conflict, which began in October 2023, has caused significant casualties, with over 4,000 deaths and 16,000 injuries reported in Lebanon. Both sides have accused each other of breaching the ceasefire, and international monitors, including the U.S. and France, are working to ensure compliance.
