Body of American Mountaineer William Stampfl Found 22 Years After Avalanche in Peru
Jul 9, 2024, 02:06 PM
The body of American mountaineer William Stampfl, who disappeared 22 years ago while scaling a peak in Peru, has been found. Stampfl's remains were uncovered by melting ice in the Cordillera Blanca range of the Andes, including the peak Huascaran, a phenomenon linked to climate change. The climber was buried by an avalanche in 2002, and his body, along with his clothes, harness, and boots, was well-preserved by the cold. Peruvian police and mountain rescue workers recovered the body as glaciers in the region continue to retreat.
