Chad Thwarts Boko Haram Attack on Presidential Palace in N'Djamena, 19 Dead
Jan 8, 2025, 09:36 PM
Gunfire erupted near the presidential palace in Chad's capital, N'Djamena, on Wednesday evening, leading to a confrontation between security forces and a group of assailants from the Boko Haram jihadist group. The attack, which occurred around 7:45 p.m. local time, resulted in the deaths of 18 attackers and one security personnel member, with a total of 19 dead. Six attackers were injured, and three security personnel were also wounded. The Chadian government reported that the situation was under control following the incident, which they described as a failed attempt at destabilization. The assailants, part of a 24-person commando unit, were repelled by the presidential guard. The government confirmed that President Mahamat Idriss Déby Itno was inside the palace during the attack. The incident took place shortly after a visit by Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi to N'Djamena.
