Portuguese Parliament Designates Iranian Revolutionary Guards as Terrorist Organization with Broad Support, Despite Communist Opposition
Oct 18, 2024, 06:42 PM
The Portuguese Parliament has officially designated the Iranian Revolutionary Guards (IRGC) as a terrorist organization, a move that received broad support, with the exception of opposition from the Communist Party and abstention from the far-left Bloc of the Left party. This decision comes amid growing calls from various European leaders and members of the EU to take a firmer stance against the IRGC, which has been implicated in global terrorism and poses a direct threat to international peace and security. Sweden has also called for the EU to designate the IRGC as a terrorist entity, following a resolution passed by the U.S. House of Representatives urging the EU to take similar action. The Portuguese government plans to bring this designation to the European Union, as Portugal does not have its own terrorism list.
