EU Moves to Designate Iran's IRGC as Terrorist Organization with Support from Germany, France, and Netherlands
Oct 31, 2024, 12:50 PM
The European Union is moving towards designating Iran's Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) as a terrorist organization, with support from Germany, France, and the Netherlands. This follows a 2023 ruling by Germany's Düsseldorf Higher Regional Court, which attributed a 2022 attack to the IRGC. German Foreign Minister Annalena Baerbock has urged Brussels to add the IRGC to the EU's terrorist list. The presence of an IRGC officer, who is also Iran's military attaché in Vienna, at Austria's National Day parade on October 26 has intensified calls for this designation. The IRGC has been accused of attempting to murder European citizens and holding them hostage.
