China's Joint Sword-2024A Drills Around Taiwan: 28 Aircraft Cross Median Line
May 23, 2024, 05:36 AM
China has initiated large-scale military exercises around Taiwan, named Joint Sword-2024A, as a response to what it describes as 'separatist acts' by Taiwan's new President Lai. The drills, which began on Thursday and will last for two days, involve joint sea-air combat-readiness patrols, joint seizure of battlefield control, and mock precision strikes on key targets. The exercises feature dozens of Chinese aircraft, including J-16 and J-20 fighter jets, and naval vessels, such as Type 052D destroyers and Type 071 amphibious ships. Notably, 28 aircraft crossed the median line into Taiwan's air defense identification zone, and 15 PLA warships along with 16 coast guard ships are participating. In response, Taiwan has mobilized its military, deploying sea, air, and ground forces, including Hsiung Feng III supersonic anti-ship missiles. Taiwan's Defense Ministry condemned the drills as 'irrational provocations' and emphasized its readiness to defend the island's sovereignty. The situation has heightened tensions in the region, with Taiwan's military on high alert and actively gathering intelligence on Chinese military movements.
