Biden Extends TPS for 800,000 Immigrants Including Venezuelans and Salvadorans Before Trump Takes Office
Jan 10, 2025, 06:00 PM
President Joe Biden's administration has extended Temporary Protected Status (TPS) for approximately 600,000 Venezuelans, over 200,000 Salvadorans, as well as immigrants from Sudan and Ukraine residing in the United States for an additional 18 months, the Department of Homeland Security announced on Friday. The TPS for Venezuelans is extended until October 2, 2026, following concerns over the inauguration of Nicolás Maduro and ongoing political and humanitarian crises. TPS for Salvadorans is extended from March 10, 2025, to September 9, 2026, due to environmental conditions that prevent safe return. The extensions, announced by Homeland Security Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas, allow eligible individuals to legally remain and work in the U.S. This decision affects a total of 800,000 immigrants and comes just days before President-elect Donald Trump is set to take office, having pledged mass deportations that could put these protections at risk.
