The Yantar was monitored by the Royal Navy frigate HMS Somerset and the support vessel RFA Proteus, with reports indicating that a Royal Navy submarine surfaced close to the Yantar to signal that it was being observed. The Yantar, known for gathering intelligence and mapping critical underwater infrastructure, was approximately 45 miles off the British coast within the UK's Exclusive Economic Zone.
