Qualifier Learner Tien, 19, Stuns Medvedev in Australian Open Five-Set Epic
Jan 16, 2025, 03:59 PM
American qualifier Learner Tien, ranked No. 121, stunned No. 5 seed Daniil Medvedev in the second round of the Australian Open, winning 6-3, 7-6(4), 6-7(8), 1-6, 7-6(10-7). The 19-year-old had a match point in the third set tiebreak but ultimately secured victory in the fifth-set tiebreak. The marathon match lasted 4 hours and 48 minutes and concluded at 2:55 a.m. in Melbourne. Tien advances to the third round, becoming the youngest American man to reach this stage at a Grand Slam since Donald Young in 2007. He is also the first qualifier to defeat a Top 5 player at the Australian Open since 2005. Tien, who participated in the Next Gen Finals, eliminated Medvedev, a three-time Australian Open finalist, after the late-night epic.
