China's Feiyi: First Submarine-Launched Underwater and Aerial Drone
Jan 23, 2025, 08:10 PM
Chinese scientists have developed the world's first submarine-launched drone, named 'Feiyi,' capable of operating both underwater and in the air. Developed by researchers at Northwestern Polytechnical University and the China Aerodynamics Research and Development Centre, the drone features foldable wings that transition between water and air within five seconds, enhancing its concealment and survivability. Led by Dong Changyin, the project was detailed in the journal Acta Aeronautica et Astronautica Sinica. It is designed for military applications, including marine reconnaissance, surveillance, and strike missions. The drone can return to its submarine after completing its mission, a capability that distinguishes it from U.S. military drones, which lack underwater mobility. The development is seen as part of China's broader strategy to counter U.S. military advancements and strengthen its capabilities in potential conflicts, such as a scenario involving Taiwan.
