NATO Takes Over Military Aid Coordination for Ukraine from US Amid Trump's Skepticism, Reuters Reports
Dec 17, 2024, 05:43 PM
NATO has assumed the role of coordinating Western military aid to Ukraine from the United States, as reported by Reuters. This transition, which was planned and follows a delay of several months, aims to safeguard the support mechanism against potential changes in U.S. policy under incoming President Donald Trump, who will take office in January 2025 and has expressed skepticism towards NATO and criticized the level of U.S. aid to Ukraine. The new NATO mission, known as NATO Security Assistance and Training for Ukraine (NSATU), is headquartered at Clay Barracks, a U.S. base in Wiesbaden, Germany, and is now fully operational. NSATU is set to have around 700 personnel, including troops stationed at NATO's military headquarters in Belgium and logistics hubs in Poland and Romania. Despite this shift, diplomats note that the impact may be limited as the U.S. remains the dominant power within NATO and the primary supplier of arms to Ukraine.
