Jimmy Carter, 100, Honored with Six-Day Funeral; Trump to Attend
Jan 4, 2025, 01:45 PM
Former President Jimmy Carter, who passed away on December 29 at the age of 100, is being honored with six days of funeral observances starting Saturday in Georgia. The ceremonies began with his remains being transported from Phoebe Sumter Medical Center in Americus, Georgia, with the motorcade passing through his hometown of Plains, where his longtime Secret Service agents carried his coffin. A moment of silence was held at 3 p.m. with Governor Brian Kemp and state officials. Carter's body will be taken to Atlanta for a private service at the Carter Presidential Center and will lie in state at the Georgia State Capitol. He will then be transported to Washington, D.C., where he will lie in state in the Capitol Rotunda from January 7 to January 9. A state funeral will be held at the Washington National Cathedral on January 9, after which he will be laid to rest beside his wife, Rosalynn Carter, in Plains. President Donald Trump plans to attend the funeral, and President Joe Biden is expected to deliver the eulogy. Congressional leaders, including Speaker Mike Johnson and Senate Majority Leader John Thune, will participate in the tribute.
