Apple to Pay $95 Million to Settle Siri Eavesdropping Lawsuit; Users May Get Up to $20 Per Device
Jan 2, 2025, 08:37 PM
Apple Inc. has agreed to pay $95 million in cash to settle a proposed class-action lawsuit alleging that its voice-activated Siri assistant violated users' privacy over more than a decade. The lawsuit, filed in 2019 in the San Jose, California federal court, claimed that Siri recorded private conversations after being unintentionally activated and shared the data with third parties, including advertisers, without users' consent. Affected users may receive compensation of up to $20 per Siri-enabled device they own, pending approval of the settlement. The $95 million settlement represents about nine hours of profit for Apple, which reported a net income of $93.74 billion in its latest fiscal year. A similar lawsuit against Google's Voice Assistant is also pending in the same court.
