Syrian Leader Ahmed al-Sharaa Plans New Constitution, Transition, and HTS Dissolution
Dec 29, 2024, 09:13 AM
Ahmed al-Sharaa, the leader of the new Syrian administration, has outlined a comprehensive plan for the country's future in an interview with Al Arabiya. He stated that the process of drafting a new constitution could take up to three years, emphasizing the need for a lasting political framework following the fall of the Assad regime. Al-Sharaa also mentioned that the transition period in Syria might last up to four years before national elections can be held under the new constitution. He stressed the importance of a national dialogue conference where the dissolution of Hayat Tahrir al-Sham (HTS) will be announced. Additionally, Al-Sharaa discussed the integration of Kurdish forces into the Syrian Defense Ministry, asserting that Kurds are an integral part of the Syrian fabric. He also expressed hopes that the incoming Trump administration would lift sanctions on Syria and not follow the policies of its predecessor. Al-Sharaa's vision includes negotiations with the SDF to resolve the crisis in northern Syria and ensuring that Syria does not become a launching pad for PKK attacks.
