Following an executive order signed by President Donald Trump on Monday, the U.S. State Department has halted the processing of passport applications with 'X' gender markers. The order, which recognizes only two sexes—male and female—has been implemented by Secretary of State Marco Rubio, who on Thursday instructed department staff to suspend all applications requesting an 'X' sex marker and any applications seeking to change an individual's sex marker. This policy shift aligns with Trump's broader directive titled 'Defending Women from Gender Ideology Extremism and Restoring Biological Truth to the Federal Government,' which mandates that government-issued IDs reflect an individual's sex assigned at birth. Nonbinary marker requests have been suspended, and while passports with 'X' markers, first issued in April 2022, remain valid, renewals must conform to the new policy.
