Iran Frees Nobel Laureate Narges Mohammadi for 21 Days After Tumor Surgery
Dec 4, 2024, 12:55 PM
Iranian Nobel Peace Prize laureate Narges Mohammadi has been temporarily released from prison for medical reasons. Mohammadi, incarcerated since November 2021, was granted a 21-day medical furlough following surgery to remove a tumor and a bone graft, amidst concerns over suspected cancer. Her lawyer, Mostafa Nili, announced that the Tehran prosecutor's office suspended her prison sentence for three weeks based on a recommendation from the forensic medicine organization due to her physical condition after the surgery. Upon her release, she reportedly exited the prison shouting the slogan 'Women, Life, Freedom' and was transported by ambulance. Photos show her holding a picture of Mahsa Jina Amini with 'No to gender apartheid' written on her hand. While her temporary release has been welcomed, her family criticized it as 'too little, too late' for her recovery.
