Trump Slaps 25% Tariffs and Travel Bans on Colombia After Deportation Flights Blocked
Jan 26, 2025, 07:01 PM
President Donald Trump announced a series of retaliatory measures against Colombia after the South American nation refused to accept two U.S. military deportation flights carrying approximately 160 Colombian migrants. The measures include an immediate 25% emergency tariff on all Colombian goods entering the United States, which will increase to 50% in one week. Travel bans and immediate visa revocations have been imposed on Colombian government officials, their families, and allies, along with visa sanctions on all party members of the Colombian government. Enhanced border inspections will be implemented for all Colombian nationals, and enhanced Customs and Border Protection inspections will be conducted on Colombian cargo. Financial and banking sanctions are also being enacted. Colombian President Gustavo Petro declined to allow the flights to land, stating that Colombia would not accept the deportees until the United States established a protocol for their dignified treatment. In response, President Trump emphasized that these measures are "just the beginning" and that the United States will not allow the Colombian government to violate its legal obligations regarding the acceptance and return of deported criminals and illegal migrants. The announcement was made via Trump's Truth Social account.
