Global Christian Persecution Hits Record 380 Million, Driven by Algeria and Nigeria
Jan 15, 2025, 07:13 AM
The persecution of Christians globally has escalated, with 380 million Christians facing high levels of persecution and discrimination, according to the 2025 World Persecution Index released by Open Doors. This represents an increase of 15 million from the previous year, marking a record high. The report highlights that one in seven Christians worldwide is affected, with the situation deteriorating particularly in Central Asia and sub-Saharan African countries. Notable cases include the closure of all 47 evangelical Protestant churches in Algeria, and the sentencing of Pastor Youssef Ourahmane to one year in prison for holding an unauthorized service. The report also notes a significant rise in violence against Christians in Nigeria, where 3,100 were killed, and in other African nations, driven by jihadist movements.
