Uribe Demands UN-Endorsed Intervention in Venezuela from Cúcuta; Maduro Prepares for Armed Defense
Jan 12, 2025, 01:06 AM
Former Colombian President Álvaro Uribe has called for an international military intervention in Venezuela to oust President Nicolás Maduro, whom he referred to as a dictator. Uribe made this demand from the border city of Cúcuta, advocating for an intervention preferably endorsed by the United Nations to remove Maduro from power and hold free elections. In response, Maduro has warned that Venezuela, alongside Cuba and Nicaragua, is preparing to take up arms if necessary to defend its sovereignty and peace. Maduro's statements came during the closure of the International Antifascist World Festival, where he also called for a global alliance against fascism. This follows Maduro's controversial inauguration for a third term on January 10, 2025, which has been contested by the opposition claiming electoral fraud and asserting that Edmundo González Urrutia won the election.
