Manchester United Legend Denis Law, Only Scottish Ballon d'Or Winner, Dies at 84
Jan 17, 2025, 08:01 PM
Denis Law, legendary footballer for Manchester United, Manchester City, and Scotland, has died at the age of 84 after battling Alzheimer's disease and dementia. Known as the "King of the Stretford End" and "The Lawman," Law scored 237 goals in 404 appearances for Manchester United, making him the club's third highest goalscorer behind Sir Bobby Charlton and Wayne Rooney. He remains the only Scottish player to have won the Ballon d'Or, receiving the honor in 1964. A key member of the famed "Holy Trinity" alongside George Best and Sir Bobby Charlton, Law was the last surviving member of the trio. During his career, he won two First Division titles, the FA Cup in 1962–63, and although injured, was part of the squad that won the 1968 European Cup. Law earned 55 caps for Scotland, scoring 30 goals. Tributes have poured in from the football community honoring his legacy.
