This plant, dubbed Mammoth, is designed to remove 36,000 tons of carbon dioxide from the atmosphere annually. The facility has been described as a significant step in tackling climate change by extracting CO2 directly from the air. However, there are criticisms regarding the cost-effectiveness and practicality of the technology. Critics point out that the cost per ton of CO2 removed at Mammoth is significantly higher compared to other carbon offset methods, with estimates around $1,000 per ton for the Climeworks facility, compared to $6.25 per ton offered by other services.
