Climeworks Opens World's Largest Carbon Capture Plant in Iceland, Targets 36,000 Tons Annually

Climeworks has launched the world's largest direct air capture facility named 'Mammoth' in Hellisheiði, Iceland. The plant aims to extract 36,000 tons of CO2 from the atmosphere annually and has a theoretical maximum capacity of 1 million tons of CO2 per year. Critics argue about the high costs associated with the technology, noting that it costs $1,000 per ton to remove CO2 at this facility, compared to other methods like those offered by Terrapass for $6.25 per ton. Despite skepticism regarding its practicality and cost-effectiveness, Climeworks CEO Christoph Gebald stated that the challenge of carbon removal can't be met by a single solution but requires scaling promising technologies.
