Biden's Asylum Executive Action Reduces Border Encounters by 40% to 2,400, Says Mayorkas
Jun 26, 2024, 06:00 PM
President Biden's recent executive action on asylum, announced on June 4, has led to a significant decrease in border encounters. According to the Department of Homeland Security (DHS), encounters along the U.S. Southwest Border have dropped by more than 40% over the past three weeks, bringing the daily average down to around 2,400 encounters. This marks one of the lowest levels of border crossings during the Biden administration. The decline in encounters was noted in the lead-up to Thursday's debate, with arrests by Border Patrol dipping to around 1,900 on Sunday and 2,100 on Monday. Homeland Security Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas confirmed that the reduction in encounters is not enough to lift the asylum restrictions.
