Brazil Probes Bolsonaro's Coup Plot with 37 Indictments, Planned for December 15, 2022
Dec 1, 2024, 02:49 PM
Brazil's Federal Police are investigating a plot involving former President Jair Bolsonaro and his allies to prevent Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva from assuming the presidency in 2023. The investigation has uncovered evidence suggesting plans for a coup, including the assassination of Lula, his vice president, and a high-ranking judge. A key piece of evidence, a USB drive found with Lieutenant Colonel Hélio Ferreira Lima, contained detailed plans for the coup. The plan reportedly failed due to a lack of support from two senior Brazilian military officials. The Federal Police's 884-page report has led to the indictment of 37 individuals, with Bolsonaro cited 90 times. The report highlights December 15, 2022, as the planned date for the coup, which included the sequestration of Supreme Court Justice Alexandre de Moraes. The report is now under review by the Attorney General's Office, following its submission by Justice Moraes.
