General Braga Netto, Bolsonaro's Running Mate, Arrested Over 2022 Coup Attempt

Brazil's Federal Police have arrested General Braga Netto, former minister in the Bolsonaro government and candidate for vice president in the 2022 election, on charges of obstruction of justice and involvement in the attempted coup d'état in 2022. The arrest was made on Saturday, December 14, 2024, in Copacabana, Rio de Janeiro, as part of 'Operação Contragolpe'. The warrant was issued by Supreme Federal Court Justice Alexandre de Moraes. Braga Netto is being investigated alongside former President Jair Bolsonaro and more than 30 others for crimes including violent abolition of the democratic state, coup d'état, and participation in a criminal organization. He is the first four-star general to be arrested in Brazil's history. The Federal Police also conducted searches at his residence as part of the investigation into anti-democratic acts aimed at preventing the inauguration of the legitimately elected government in 2022.
