Texas Veteran Shamsud-Din Jabbar Kills 14 in Bourbon Street Attack; Bomb Materials Found
Jan 3, 2025, 08:39 AM
The FBI has identified 42-year-old Shamsud-Din Jabbar, a U.S.-born citizen from Texas and a U.S. Army veteran who served in Afghanistan, as the suspect responsible for a deadly attack on Bourbon Street in New Orleans on January 1, 2025. Jabbar drove a rented Ford pickup truck into crowds during New Year's celebrations, killing 14 people and injuring over 30 others. He was killed during an exchange with police on the scene. Authorities found two improvised explosive devices near the site of the attack, and bomb-making materials were discovered at a New Orleans Airbnb linked to Jabbar. Further investigation revealed that bomb-making materials were also found at his home in Houston, Texas, where a Quran was reportedly found open to a passage about martyrdom. The FBI reported that Jabbar had reserved the rental truck more than six weeks prior to the attack, indicating premeditation. The bureau has released surveillance images of Jabbar taken about an hour before the attack and is seeking public assistance from anyone who may have seen him or the blue ice chest containing an explosive device.
