Russia's 2025 Military Spending Rises to $145 Billion, 32.5% of Budget, as Putin Approves Record Increase
Dec 1, 2024, 12:36 PM
Russian President Vladimir Putin has approved a military-focused federal budget for 2025-2027, significantly increasing defense spending to record levels. Signed into law on Sunday and published on the official legal information portal, the 2025 budget allocates approximately 32.5% of total expenditures, amounting to 13.5 trillion rubles (over $145 billion or €137 billion), to national defense. This marks a nearly 30% increase from 2024, making military spending 1.3 times higher than the previous year and accounting for about 6.3% of Russia's GDP. Notably, this budget will be the most secretive in Russia's post-Soviet history, with one-third of the budget hidden. Defense spending now surpasses combined allocations for education, healthcare, social policy, and the national economy. The substantial increase reflects Russia's commitment to bolstering its military capabilities amid ongoing tensions and the conflict in Ukraine.
