FCC Proposes Cybersecurity Rules After Salt Typhoon Infiltrates Eight U.S. Telecom Companies
Dec 10, 2024, 01:07 PM
The Federal Communications Commission (FCC) has proposed new cybersecurity rules in response to reports of the Chinese hacking group Salt Typhoon infiltrating at least eight U.S. telecom companies. The proposed regulations would require carriers to develop, update, and implement cybersecurity risk management plans, with potential penalties for non-compliance. This move follows recommendations from the FBI and the Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency (CISA) for encrypted communication to protect against such cyber threats. The FCC's draft rules represent the first instance of cybersecurity regulations being linked to existing wiretapping laws, highlighting the seriousness of the breaches attributed to Salt Typhoon.
