Alceu Collares, Rio Grande do Sul's Only Black Governor, Dies at 97
Dec 24, 2024, 02:00 PM
Alceu Collares, former governor of Rio Grande do Sul and a founding member of the Democratic Labor Party (PDT), died at the age of 97 in Porto Alegre. He had been hospitalized since December 16 due to severe pneumonia, following an emphysema diagnosis eight years ago. Collares was the first and only Black person to govern Rio Grande do Sul, serving from 1991 to 1994. His extensive political career also included serving as mayor and city councilor of Porto Alegre and five terms as a federal deputy. Before entering politics, he was a cavalry corporal, telegraph operator, and played football for Guarany de Bagé. Known for his charisma, eloquence, and unwavering commitment to democracy and social justice, Collares left a significant impact on Brazilian politics. President Lula expressed that Collares leaves a 'great legacy for Brazil,' while former President Dilma Rousseff praised his 'honorable life.' The current governor has declared three days of official mourning in his honor.
