Danish PM Tells Trump Greenland Will Decide Its Own Independence, Not for Sale
Jan 15, 2025, 06:14 PM
Danish Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen has informed President-elect Donald Trump that Greenland will decide on its own independence, according to a statement from the Danish Prime Minister's Office. During a 45-minute telephone conversation, Frederiksen emphasized that Greenland is not for sale, referencing Greenlandic Premier Mute Egede's statement that the territory is not available for purchase. Frederiksen also highlighted the importance of strengthening security in the Arctic and indicated Denmark's readiness to assume greater responsibility in this regard. Greenland's government has expressed openness to enhancing ties with the United States, with Premier Egede stating that they have begun a dialogue and are exploring cooperation possibilities with Trump, particularly in defense and mining sectors, given Greenland's rich mineral resources.
