Feds Deploy Tech to Track Large Drones Over New York and New Jersey
Dec 16, 2024, 01:30 PM
Mysterious drone sightings over New York and New Jersey have prompted concern among residents and officials, leading to calls for federal intervention. The drones, described as large and flying at night, have been spotted over residential areas, military installations, and critical infrastructure. The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) has allowed drones to fly at night since September 2023, which might explain the increased sightings. Despite assurances from the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) that there is no foreign involvement or public safety threat, local leaders and residents remain skeptical. Senator Andy Kim has personally conducted a drone hunt, observing several drones at once. Senators Chuck Schumer and Kirsten Gillibrand, along with New Jersey Senators Cory Booker and Andy Kim, have urged federal agencies to deploy advanced drone detection technology to track and identify the origins of these drones. The FBI has received nearly 5,000 tips but has found less than 100 credible leads. Authorities have warned against shooting down the drones due to safety concerns.
