McDonald's Slivered Onions on Quarter Pounders Linked to E. coli: 104 Sickened, 34 Hospitalized, One Dead
Nov 13, 2024, 10:34 PM
As of November 13, health officials report that 104 people across 14 U.S. states have been infected with E. coli O157:H7 in an outbreak linked to onions served on McDonald's Quarter Pounder hamburgers. The number of illnesses has risen from 90 to 104 at last count. At least 34 individuals have been hospitalized, and one person has died. The outbreak has affected several states, including Colorado with at least 30 cases, Utah with eight reported cases, and New Mexico confirming 10 cases. Illnesses were reported between September 12 and October 21. Four people have developed a potentially life-threatening kidney disease complication. McDonald's has returned the Quarter Pounder to U.S. menus after testing ruled out beef patties as the E. coli source, identifying slivered onions as the likely culprit. Officials are still testing other E. coli cases to determine if they are linked to the same outbreak.
