UNGA Adopts Resolution to Commemorate July 11 as Srebrenica Genocide Memorial Day
May 23, 2024, 01:59 PM
The United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) has adopted a resolution to designate July 11 as the International Day of Reflection and Commemoration of the 1995 genocide in Srebrenica. The resolution, which faced strong opposition from Bosnian Serbs and Serbia, was passed with 84 votes in favor, 19 against, and 68 abstentions. The genocide, which occurred in 1995, saw Bosnian Serb forces kill approximately 8,000 Muslim men and boys. The resolution aims to promote a culture of remembrance and peace in Bosnia and Herzegovina and the broader region. Key co-sponsors of the resolution included Germany and Rwanda, while countries like China, Russia, and Serbia voted against it. Despite the opposition, the resolution unequivocally condemns any denial of the Srebrenica genocide as a historical event.
