UN General Assembly Votes to Establish July 11 as Srebrenica Genocide Memorial Day with 84 Votes in Favor
May 23, 2024, 03:28 PM
The United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) has voted to designate July 11 as the International Day of Reflection and Commemoration of the 1995 Genocide in Srebrenica. The resolution was adopted with 84 votes in favor, 19 against, and 68 abstentions. The genocide, which occurred during the Bosnian War, resulted in the deaths of approximately 8,000 Bosnian Muslim men and boys. The resolution, co-sponsored by Germany and Rwanda, faced strong opposition from Serbia and Bosnian Serbs, who have historically denied the genocide. Serbian President Aleksandar Vucic announced that China would vote against the resolution, emphasizing their support for Serbia. Despite the opposition, the resolution aims to promote a culture of remembrance and peace in Bosnia and Herzegovina and the region. China and Russia were among the countries that voted against the resolution. The adoption of this resolution is seen as a significant step towards acknowledging the atrocities committed and preventing future genocides.
