Germany Summons Russian Envoy, Cites 2023 GRU Cyberattack on SPD by Fancy Bear
May 3, 2024, 10:05 AM
Germany has accused Russia's military intelligence, GRU, of orchestrating a cyber operation targeting the Social Democratic Party (SPD), a major political entity within the German government. In response, Germany has taken diplomatic steps by summoning the acting Russian ambassador to address the incident and has spoken of 'consequences'. German government officials have sharply condemned the attack, demanding an immediate cessation of such cyber activities by Russia. The attack, attributed to the Russian state-backed hacker group Fancy Bear, notably disrupted several German government websites in 2023.
