Driver Rams Crowd, Opens Fire in New Orleans; 10 Dead, Mayor Calls It Terrorism
Jan 1, 2025, 12:16 PM
A pickup truck drove into a crowd on Bourbon Street in New Orleans early on New Year's Day around 3:15 am, killing at least 10 people and injuring 30 others, according to city authorities. The driver then exited the vehicle and opened fire, wounding two police officers who are now in stable condition. Reports indicate that explosives were found at the scene, and the driver's identity has not yet been released. New Orleans Mayor LaToya Cantrell described the incident as a 'terrorist attack,' while the FBI stated that it is not yet using that term. The attacker was killed in an exchange of gunfire with police. Police Superintendent Anne Kirkpatrick said the driver intentionally tried to run over as many people as possible and that the investigation is ongoing. Authorities are in contact with the White House and the Governor of Louisiana.
