New Orleans Attack: Shamsud-Din Jabbar Kills 14, Injures 30 in ISIS-Inspired Truck Rampage on Bourbon Street
Jan 3, 2025, 09:19 AM
Shamsud-Din Jabbar, a 42-year-old former US Army soldier, carried out a deadly attack in New Orleans on New Year's Day, driving a pickup truck into a crowd on Bourbon Street and killing 14 people while injuring about 30 others. Jabbar, who had pledged allegiance to the Islamic State, was fatally shot by police during a subsequent shootout. Investigations revealed that Jabbar had been planning the attack for over six weeks, having reserved the rental truck on November 14. Bomb-making materials were discovered at his homes in both Houston and New Orleans, with a workbench and hazardous materials found in his Houston garage. Additionally, Jabbar attempted to destroy evidence by setting a small fire and using accelerants at an Airbnb he had rented in New Orleans, where bomb-making precursors and a suspected silencer were recovered. The FBI found that Jabbar intended to use a transmitter in his truck to detonate two improvised explosive devices placed on Bourbon Street, though these were rendered safe and did not detonate. The attack has prompted a response from President Joe Biden, who plans to visit New Orleans to grieve with the affected community.
