In 2024, at least 10,457 migrants died or went missing while attempting to reach Spain by sea, marking the deadliest year on record for migration to the country. This figure, reported by the Spanish NGO Caminando Fronteras, represents a 58% increase compared to the previous year, with an average of nearly 30 deaths per day. The Atlantic route to the Canary Islands remains the most lethal globally, accounting for 9,757 of the fatalities.
