The UK government has announced a significant financial commitment to address the issue of potholes across England, with a total of £1.6 billion allocated for the next financial year. This funding represents a £500 million increase over the previous year's budget and is expected to enable the repair of approximately seven million potholes. Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer emphasized the importance of this investment, stating that damaged roads pose risks to lives and can result in costly repairs for families. The allocation of funds includes over £327 million for the North West, North East, and Yorkshire and Humber; more than £372 million for the East Midlands and West Midlands; over £244 million for the East of England; and more than £378 million for the South East, South West, and London. Transport Secretary Heidi Alexander highlighted the government's commitment to reversing a decade of decline in road conditions, aiming to improve safety and journey times for motorists.
