Turkey Authorizes DEM Party to Meet Jailed PKK Leader Abdullah Öcalan on December 28, First Visit in Nearly a Decade
Dec 28, 2024, 08:46 AM
Turkey's Justice Ministry has authorized a delegation from the pro-Kurdish Democratic Regions Party (DEM) to visit Abdullah Öcalan, the imprisoned leader of the Kurdistan Workers' Party (PKK), at İmralı Prison. This marks the first such visit in nearly a decade. The visit is set to take place on December 28 or 29, 2024, depending on weather conditions. The delegation, consisting of lawmakers Sırrı Süreyya Önder and Pervin Buldan, has already commenced their meeting with Öcalan, which is expected to last several hours. Following the meeting, the DEM Party plans to share details and evaluations with the public. This development is seen as a notable step in Turkey's ongoing Kurdish reconciliation efforts.
