Canada Orders ByteDance's TikTok to Dissolve Canadian Operations; App Access Unaffected
Nov 7, 2024, 02:20 AM
The Canadian government has ordered TikTok Technology Canada Inc., the Canadian subsidiary of ByteDance, to wind up its operations following a national security review under the Investment Canada Act. Despite the order to dissolve its business in Canada, the government will not block Canadians from accessing the TikTok app or creating content on the platform. Innovation Minister François-Philippe Champagne stated that the decision addresses specific risks to Canada's national security. TikTok responded by expressing its intention to challenge the order in court, arguing that shutting down its Canadian offices and "destroying hundreds of well-paying local jobs is not in anyone's best interest."
