6.8-Magnitude Earthquake in Tibet's Xizang Region Kills 126, Destroys 3,600 Homes
Jan 8, 2025, 01:07 AM
A powerful 6.8-magnitude earthquake struck Dingri County in the Xigaze region of China's Xizang Autonomous Region on Tuesday, resulting in at least 126 deaths and 188 injuries. The earthquake caused significant damage, destroying over 3,600 homes and affecting 27 villages within a 20-km radius of the epicenter. Rescue operations have been intensified with over 1,850 emergency personnel and three helicopters mobilized. Over 400 people have been rescued, and more than 30,000 residents have been relocated to 187 resettlement sites where 3,705 tents have been set up to shelter 46,525 individuals. The Chinese government has allocated 100 million yuan for emergency disaster relief, and President Xi Jinping has ordered all-out efforts to minimize casualties. The region experienced over 500 aftershocks, with the largest being a 4.4 magnitude, and more are expected in the coming days. The earthquake also led to the temporary closure of the Mount Qomolangma scenic area, though tourists and staff were reported to be in safe condition.
