Constellation Energy to Restart Three Mile Island Nuclear Plant for Microsoft in 20-Year Deal by 2028
Sep 20, 2024, 12:34 PM
Constellation Energy has signed a 20-year power purchase agreement with Microsoft to restart the Three Mile Island nuclear plant in Pennsylvania. The project involves a $1.6 billion investment to revive the plant, which was shut down in 2019. The plant is expected to be operational by 2028, providing 837 megawatts of carbon-free electricity exclusively for Microsoft's data centers. This marks the first time a U.S. nuclear plant will come back into service after being decommissioned and the first instance where an entire plant's output will be dedicated to a single customer. The deal is part of Microsoft's efforts to secure carbon-free energy to power its artificial intelligence data centers, reflecting the growing demand for clean energy in the tech industry. Additionally, the agreement will pave the way for the launch of the Crane Clean Energy Center and aims to cut 3 million tons of CO2 emissions. Constellation will pursue a license renewal to extend plant operations to at least 2054.
