Constellation to Restart Three Mile Island Plant with $1.6B Investment to Power Microsoft Data Centers
Sep 20, 2024, 11:45 AM
Constellation Energy has signed a 20-year power purchase agreement with Microsoft to supply carbon-free electricity from the revived Three Mile Island nuclear plant in Pennsylvania. Constellation plans to invest $1.6 billion to restart the plant, which was shut down in 2019, with the aim of bringing it back online by 2028. The entire output of the 835-megawatt plant will be used to power Microsoft's PJM data centers, supporting the tech giant's growing artificial intelligence ambitions. This marks the first time a U.S. nuclear plant will come back into service after being decommissioned and the first instance of an entire plant's output being dedicated to a single customer. The restart is expected to cut 3 million tons of CO2 emissions. Additionally, the project will pave the way for the launch of the Crane Clean Energy Center.
