Putin to Visit ICC Member Mongolia on September 3 Amid Arrest Warrant
Aug 30, 2024, 11:49 AM
Russian President Vladimir Putin is scheduled to visit Mongolia, an ICC member, on September 3, marking his first trip to a member state of the International Criminal Court (ICC) since the court issued an arrest warrant for him in March 2023 over alleged war crimes in Ukraine. Mongolia, a signatory of the Rome Statute, is technically obligated to comply with the ICC's arrest warrant. However, the Kremlin has expressed confidence that Putin will not be arrested during his visit. The visit is set to commemorate the 85th anniversary of the victory of Soviet and Mongolian forces over Japan. Despite the ICC warrant, Mongolia has reportedly assured Russia that Putin will not be detained. Ukraine has urged Mongolia to arrest Putin, but the Kremlin remains unworried, citing strong diplomatic relations with Mongolia.
