6.1 Magnitude Earthquake in Michoacán, Mexico Triggers 37 Aftershocks, Felt in Manzanillo

A magnitude 6.1 earthquake struck the southwestern region of Michoacán, Mexico, early on Sunday, with the epicenter located 29 kilometers southwest of Coalcomán de Vázquez Pallares. The tremor, which occurred at 2:32 a.m. local time, prompted the activation of seismic alerts in Mexico City. The earthquake had a depth of 10 kilometers, according to the National Seismological Service. No immediate reports of casualties or damage have been reported. Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum stated that the National Emergency Committee reported no new developments and initiated review protocols. The earthquake was followed by 37 aftershocks, the largest being a magnitude 4.0, as reported by the National Seismological Service. The tremor was felt moderately to strongly in Manzanillo and lightly in several other locations including Apatzingán, Uruapan, Pátzcuaro, Puerto Vallarta, Zapopan, Guadalajara, Tlajomulco de Zúñiga, Talpa de Allende, Cihuatlán, and parts of Mexico City and Nayarit.
