6.2-Magnitude Earthquake Hits Michoacán; Mexico City Activates Seismic Alert, Over 400 Aftershocks Recorded

An earthquake of magnitude 6.2 struck near Coalcomán, Michoacán, Mexico, in the early hours of January 12, 2025. The earthquake occurred at approximately 2:32 a.m. local time with an epicenter located 29 kilometers southwest of Coalcomán and at a shallow depth of 10 kilometers, according to the Servicio Sismológico Nacional (SSN). The seismic alert was activated in Mexico City at 2:35 a.m., and residents reported feeling the tremor. Claudia Sheinbaum, President of Mexico City, stated that emergency protocols were initiated and no significant damages or casualties were reported. The German Research Centre for Geosciences (GFZ) updated the magnitude to 6.6. Over 400 aftershocks have been recorded, the largest being of magnitude 4.5, and safety inspections are ongoing. The earthquake was also felt in the states of Colima and Jalisco.
