Rebecca Cheptegei, a 33-year-old Ugandan Olympic marathon runner who recently competed in the 2024 Paris Olympics, has died after being set on fire by her former boyfriend, Dickson Ndiema. The attack occurred at her home in Kenya, where she was doused in petrol and set alight. Cheptegei sustained burns to 75% of her body and succumbed to her injuries at Moi Teaching and Referral Hospital in Eldoret, Kenya. The incident reportedly stemmed from a land dispute. This tragic event marks the third prominent sportswoman killed in Kenya since October 2021.
