For First Time in Decades, Washington Post Will Not Endorse Presidential Candidate in 2024 Election
Oct 25, 2024, 04:17 PM
For the first time in decades, The Washington Post will not endorse a presidential candidate in the upcoming 2024 election. Publisher Will Lewis announced that the newspaper will not be making an endorsement, stating, "The Washington Post will not be making an endorsement of a presidential candidate in this election. Nor in any future presidential election. We are returning to our roots of not endorsing presidential candidates." He added, "Our job as the newspaper of the capital city of the most important country in the world is to be independent." This marks a significant departure from their tradition, as the newspaper has endorsed Democratic candidates for president consistently over the past 36 years, with the exception of Michael Dukakis in 1988. The decision follows a similar move by the Los Angeles Times, which also declined to endorse a candidate this year.
