The U.S. House of Representatives has passed a stopgap spending bill to avert a government shutdown, funding federal agencies through December 20. The measure, which now moves to the Senate for approval, aims to prevent a shutdown just weeks before the November 5 election and as the new fiscal year begins. The bill passed with a vote of 341 to 82, with all 209 Democrats and 132 Republicans voting in favor. Speaker Mike Johnson secured the passage with the help of Democratic votes, despite defections from 82 Republicans. The bill does not include the SAVE Act, which had been demanded by former President Donald Trump. Additionally, the measure aims to boost security for presidential candidates ahead of the elections.
